Sago is a staple food in the coastal flood plains of Papua New Guinea and is prepared in various forms. Eight sago-based traditional foods are described here. They were obtained from a survey conducted from 1992 to 1994. These foods included Dia, Kalua, Alung, Sago Fomo, Karamap saksak, Kilikan, Mona Sagu, and Sagu bamboo. Coconut, banana and peanut are normally combined with sago to improve the nutritional quality. Certain areas for upgrading these foods are discussed.
