Upland rice
Abstract
Upland or hill rice does not differ botanically from swamp rice. It does, require different climate and soil conditions. Swamp rice has to be grown in water for the greater period of growth, whereas this is unnecessary in the case of upland rice. It should not be thought, however, that any kind of rice is a suitable crop for areas lacking in water. A crop of upland rice needs at least as much water as one of corn, and more than guinea corn. Rice also likes a fairly high temperature and a clay loam soil, though it will grow on lighter and more open soils provided the water supply in such soils is maintained.
